Jack O-Lantern

This Halloween craft is the perfect activity for all toddlers regardless of age or developmental skill level. You can also further increase their creativity by having your toddler choose what kind of eyes and mouth they want before cutting them out.

Supplies:

  • Construction Paper – white, orange, black, + brown
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Green glitter

Activity Instructions:

  1. Cut out 6-8 strips of orange paper
  2. Cut out eyes and mouth in black paper
  3. Cut out a stem in brown paper
  4. Provide your toddler with full white sheet of paper (see toddler instructions for rest)

Toddler Instructions By Age:

1-2 year olds:
  1. Glue one side of orange strip and hand it to your toddler. Instruct them to place on paper and provide help placing it as needed.
  2. Continue with additional strips of paper and help them to form a circle (does not need to be a perfect circle)
  3. Glue one side of each eye and mouth and hand them one at a time to your toddler to attach on top of orange strips.
  4. Glue one side of stem and hand to toddler, providing help as needed to attach to top.
  5. (Using the Elmer’s glue, draw a vine coming off the stem.) – Adult step
  6. With hand over hand help, help your toddler pour glitter over the glue. Shake off excess glitter.
2-3 year olds:
  1. Help your toddler add glue to one side of orange strip. Instruct them to place strip on paper and provide help as needed.
  2. Continue with additional strips, helping them to form a circle (can be abstract!)
  3. Help your toddler add glue to eyes and mouth and place on top of orange strips.
  4. Help your toddler add glue to stem and attach to top of circle.
  5. (Using the Elmer’s glue, draw a vine coming off the stem.) – Adult step
  6. Help your toddler pour glitter over the glue and to shake off the excess glitter.
3+ year olds:
  1. Instruct your toddler to add glue to one side of orange strip, providing help as needed. Then, instruct them to place the strip on the paper.
  2. Continue with additional strips, providing help as needed to glue and form a circle (can be abstract!)
  3. Instruct your toddler to add glue to eyes and mouth and to place them on top of the orange circle, providing help as needed.
  4. Instruct your toddler to add glue to stem and to attach it to the top of the circle, providing help as needed.
  5. (Using the Elmer’s glue, draw a vine coming off the stem.) – Adult step
  6. Help your toddler to pour glitter over the glue and to shake off the excess glitter.
