Edible Sand

Did you know you can make edible sand and bring the beach to your home? My toddlers had a blast with this activity, but be forewarned that it can get messy which is all part of the sensory fun!

Fine Motor Skills:

  • Pouring and scooping
  • Grasp patterns on various tools
  • Hand eye coordination

Related Cooking Skills:

  • Measuring ingredients
  • Pouring ingredients into bowl
  • Accurately pouring/placing ingredients to desired location without spilling

Bonus Skills:

  • Sensory Play
  • Science Learning

Supplies:

  • Cheerios
  • Blender
  • Tub container
  • Measuring cups/spoons
  • Small beach toys
  • Water (optional)

Activity Instructions:

  1. Add at least 2 cups of cheerios to blender (amount of cheerios needed will depend on the size of play container chosen). Blend cheerios until no chunks remain.
  2. Pour into tub container and spread it out along the bottom. Blend more Cheerios if needed to get desired amount.
  3. Add in measuring cups and spoons, and small beach toys.
  4. Let your toddler play!

Toddler Instructions:

  1. Let your toddler free play with the cups, spoons, and beach toys.
  2. You can direct them to scoop sand with any of the provided items and to fill larger items.
  3. Optional: give them water to pour into the tub. This will make the activity a bit messier, but the added science learning and sensory play is a plus!
